Wednesday 4 September saw the topping out ceremony for the new Blinq apartment complexes in Capelle aan den IJssel. The site of the former ‘de Blinkert’ swimming pool complex is being redeveloped by building contractor Van Wijnen into 180 apartments spread across four residential buildings for the Municipality of Capelle aan den IJssel.
During the afternoon ceremony, executives from the parties involved hoisted the flag, a symbolic act to mark the milestone of reaching the building’s highest point. This was celebrated in the presence of representatives of the Municipality of Capelle aan den IJssel, Havensteder, a.s.r. real estate and all the other parties involved. They were also joined by the buyers of the owner-occupied apartments. The residential block containing the 45 social rental homes for Havensteder will be delivered by the end of 2024, with the remaining three residential blocks and the public space scheduled for completion and delivery by mid-2025.
Theo Rook, Van Wijnen West Regional Director: “It brings us immense pride to be shaping this new living environment in our role as builders and developers. Just like before, this area will be a focal point for interaction, connection, mobility and exercise. Together, we’re creating a neighbourhood where everyone can feel at home.”
The 180 dwellings are spread across four residential blocks. The project includes a residential building with 45 social rental homes for Havensteder and a residential building with 45 mid-priced rental apartments for the ASR Dutch Core Residential Fund, a.s.r. real estate’s residential fund. A further two residential buildings featuring 25 stacked private-sector rental apartments and 65 private-sector owner-occupied and rental apartments will also be constructed. The mix of housing options fosters connections among different target groups, while also addressing the growing need for affordable housing.
Robbert van Dijk, Fund Director at ASR Dutch Core Residential Fund: “Looking ahead, we’re really excited about the scheduled delivery of the mid-priced rental apartments, which will allow us to offer tenants a comfortable and affordable home in a green setting.”
Jeff Ruijtenbeek, Development Manager at Havensteder: “We’re delighted to be adding 45 sustainable and comfortable apartments to the social housing inventory in Capelle aan den IJssel. The former ‘De Blinkert’ swimming pool is being transformed into a fresh, vibrant residential environment that caters to diverse resident groups. We’re excited to be part of this, and to play a role in ensuring Blinq will be a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging.”
Besides maintaining the original focus on ‘sports’ (exercise), the Municipality sought a location where various target groups could ‘come together’ and easily ‘connect’, including with current residents in the neighbourhood. Developing a living environment where these elements are blended promotes social cohesion and diversity. This is what the district deserves: a high-quality living environment that radiates throughout the neighbourhood.
Eric Faassen, Councillor for Urban Development: “We’re delighted to witness the creative ways in which local residents’ cherished memories of the ‘De Blinkert’ swimming pool are being preserved. Recognisable features from the old swimming pool are woven into the design, with starting blocks repurposed as new seating features and the multi-purpose plaza, reminiscent of the pool, serving as a rainwater collection area.”
