Avery Dennison is a global leader in materials science and digital identification solutions. The company produces self-adhesive labels for a wide range of industries, brand labels and tags for clothing, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) inlays, and specialized medical products. Innovation and sustainability are embedded in the company’s DNA. Since 2014, its European headquarters has been located in Oegstgeest at the Leiden Bio Science Park. In 2024, the building was acquired by the ASR Dutch Science Park Fund. “This location definitely adds innovative value for us,” says Helger Reitsma, Vice President Marketing at Avery Dennison.
The Avery Dennison headquarters was designed by Paul de Ruiter Architects with a focus on sustainability and health. The striking glass building has an AA++ energy label and holds the BREEAM Very Good certification. Among other features, the office includes energy-efficient heating and cooling with underground storage, heat-reflective glass, energy-regenerating elevators, motion-controlled lighting, and a large green roof with 100 birdhouses that support local biodiversity. The 12,154 m² building houses both office and laboratory spaces, with highlights including the atrium and a state-of-the-art Research & Development center. “It’s a great place to work. I really enjoy it. The building has an open feel and flexible workspaces,” says Helger.
Cross-pollination
Els Boom, Director Communications at Avery Dennison, adds: “We are an inclusive company with no fewer than 50 nationalities under one roof. The strong culture, innovative environment, focus on sustainability, and the building itself make us attractive to both new and existing employees.” The location also fosters collaboration with other companies. Els continues: “We host many of our European clients here and engage with various businesses on the science park that share our values around innovation and sustainability. Through AD Procerta, we offer our lab for testing various label applications for the pharmaceutical and automotive industries, always with attention to the specific needs of each sector.”

Sustainability as a continuous process
Avery Dennison places great importance on sustainability. Helger: “It’s not just about our products, but also our worldview, social responsibility, workplace inclusion, and diversity. You can see it reflected in our buildings, including our European headquarters. We want to contribute to a better world and aim to achieve our sustainability goals by 2030. But in reality, sustainability is a continuous process.” The company’s goals align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Avery Dennison delivers innovations that promote the circular economy and invests in recycling. Through the AD Circular program, customers can recycle used paper and film label liners in collaboration with recycling partners. Through its activities and supply chain, Avery Dennison works with customers, suppliers, and partners to reduce environmental impact through innovation and efficiency. The company also strives to improve the living standards of its people and communities and aims to connect and bring people together.
Milestone
2025 is a special year for Avery Dennison, marking its 90th anniversary. In 1935, Stan Avery created the first modern self-adhesive label and founded the company in Southern California, USA. “We’re proud of this milestone and of how we’ve evolved and pushed boundaries over the years. We remain committed to building a better, fairer world through intelligent solutions that address challenges around circularity, recycling, environmental impact, (bio-based) material use, and emission reduction. With technologies like RFID, we offer solutions that help reduce (food) waste and improve logistics efficiency. Innovation is essential to Avery Dennison, and we continue to invest in research and development to make a positive impact.”
