Waagblok heritage block in Leiden completed

On Thursday, 8 May 2014, department store V&D opened its doors in the newly redeveloped Waagblok block at Aalmarkt in Leiden. This was the last step in the completion by Provast of the development commissioned by a.s.r. real estate investment management.

The Sting, a fashion retailer, had already moved to the block earlier, opening its 3000 m² outlet on 17 April. The bicycle parking station, which can accommodate no fewer than 1,000 bikes, first opened on the same day. This is an asset to the city given that 1,800 bicycles are parked on the streets on an average Saturday. The free underground bicycle parking facility has entrances and exits at Breestraat and Aalmarkt.

V&D House of Ideas
The completely revamped V&D store in Leiden will be the country's first House of Ideas, V&D's new retail concept. Here, customers can experience and learn about innovations in use of materials, for instance in flooring and furniture. New concepts, new premium brand shops and a totally new house style will also be presented, as well as a new routing, pop-up stores and an eye-catching style wall. The La Place restaurant has undergone a complete overhaul too.

Shopping area completed
The Aalmarkt Plan, which is a key element in bringing a boost to the main shopping area in Leiden city centre, is made up of two blocks. The arrival of the new retail outlets ties in perfectly with the shopping strategy for the city centre.

Provast has redeveloped Waagblok in close collaboration with a.s.r. real estate investment management and V&D; the investment involved was €45 million. The Waagblok development is an investment of the ASR Dutch Prime Retail Fund.
